There should be one inch of space between the barn door and the wall frame.

Use a color that matches the door or the trim in your home.
A backer board is only required if you don t have this much space available see steps 3 5 below.
Use the drywall anchors spacers and lag bolts to secure the mounting board.
In this project the mounting board was painted black and the edges rounded slightly for a more finished appearance.
It is advised not to install the track directly into the drywall so we first needed to install a header board above our door opening.
To secure the track to the wall and add support for the heavy barn door cut a 1 x 4 mounting board the same length as but a little wider than the track.
Which is great if you re only ever going to have your door closed.
Without the addition of this header board the door track would only have hit something called a header inside the wall which is basically two 2x4s stacked on top of each other in a couple of places over the doorway.
